This city, located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Thau lagoon, has roots dating back to ancient times, although its development as a fundamental nucleus for the region is more recent in historical terms.
In ancient times, the area surrounding Sète was known to be a fishing ground for the first inhabitants of the region. However, the real transformation of Sète began in the seventeenth century. With the creation of the Canal du Midi in 1681, connecting the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, Sète became the end point of this important canal and therefore an essential port for trade in the south of France.
In the nineteenth century, development continued by leaps and bounds. The booming fishing industry, coupled with the arrival of the railway, solidified Sète as a crucial port city.
