There’s no need to dive into crowded cities or busy hotspots to enjoy architectural wonders, taste exquisite local dishes, and experience the true art de vivre à la française.

These are the villages I love the most. I’ve visited them time and again over the years, and today I’m sharing a personal selection of 12 hidden gems. These are places you can explore at your own pace, far from the crowds, so you can enjoy the very best of southern France—just like a local.

What has always amazed me about France is the number of charming villages it has, all very close to each other. In a few days you can visit several of these magical places, but you can also choose to stay in just one and let yourself be carried away by the slow and relaxed pace of local life.

Each has its own charm, and the beauty of exploring the South of France is that you can decide whether to do it in one trip or if you prefer to get to know them little by little, enjoying each experience to the fullest.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_76 ez-toc-wrap-center counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey This is one of those villages that catches you as soon as you arrive. With its medieval atmosphere, the murmur of the Vidourle river and that relaxed air so characteristic of the south of France.

Sommières is not a particularly touristy village, so here you can live and breathe the genuine atmosphere of the South of France.

Every corner of the village has something to tell, and if there is one thing you can not miss on your visit is to get lost in the old town. Strolling through the cobbled streets, you will discover the beauty of the Church of Saint-Pons, a jewel of the twelfth century that stands majestically among the stone houses.

We love to tour the village as a family, imagine what life was like in those days and then go up to the Castle Museum to learn a little more about the fascinating history of the region.

But what really steals the show in Sommières is its Roman Bridge, built in the 1st century no less.

Sommières, an ideal place to take a break, slow down, and continue exploring the old town.

The bridge, with its simple elegance and striking presence over the Vidourle River, feels like a portal back in time. This charming village is the perfect base for those wanting to explore the natural beauty of the area, where pink flamingos, white horses, and black bulls roam freely.

Here, nature takes center stage. Hiking trails and horseback rides through the Camargue offer unforgettable adventures for the whole family.

To help you plan your trip and make the most of every moment, I’ve put together a complete guide to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, full of family-friendly activities, nature-filled routes, and all the must-see highlights of this fascinating corner of the Camargue.

The village is also known for its rich history and strong gypsy heritage. Every May, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer hosts a major pilgrimage in honor of Saint Sarah, the patron saint of the Roma people.
