Le Duché d’Uzès is an imposing building that is located in the heart of the city. Its military origins are evidenced in its donjon, the Bermonde tower (twelfth century), its walls and towers at the corners. As you walk through this historic place, you will be able to appreciate the evolution of the history of France in its exceptional Renaissance façade of the sixteenth century, where the classical orders of architecture are combined: Ionic, Doric and Corinthian, something unusual to find in the same façade.
The passage of the Great Century and the eighteenth century is evident in the facades with large windows that open onto the courtyard of honor and the garden. During this journey back in time, you will have the opportunity to discover the almost thousand-year-old cellars, enjoy the magnificent view from the top of the donjon over the city and its surroundings, and admire the furnished apartments that are still inhabited by the ducal family.

Visit the Saint-Théodorit Cathedral of Uzès
The cathedral of Uzès is an architectural masterpiece that you can not miss. Its high vaults and beautiful stained glass windows will immerse you in an atmosphere of spirituality and beauty.
The cathedral of Saint-Théodorit was built from 1090 on the site of a Roman temple. The first building, in Romanesque style, reflected the influence of the Cluny order.

It was partially demolished during the Albigensian Crusade in 1177, then rebuilt. However, on May 13, 1563, at the beginning of the wars of religion, the medieval cathedral was totally destroyed. Only the bell tower, the Feestrelle tower, remained standing, although with two floors less.
More about the Saint-Théodorit Cathedral in Uzès
It was rebuilt between 1642 and 1663 and adapted internally (reduction of the choir) after the concordat of 1801, when the diocese of Uzès was suppressed and the cathedral had to adapt to its new function as a parish church. In 1873, a neo-Romanesque façade was added to the old building. The interior, with ribbed vaults, was probably richer than it appears today. In the chapels surrounding the choir, some beautiful paintings are still preserved on the ceilings and walls. Much of the furniture disappeared during the Revolution, except for the organ, one of the most beautiful in the region, flanked by panels painted in gray and gold of the seventeenth century (1685).
Discover the Fenestrelle Tower
The Feestrerle Tower, 42 meters high, is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint-Théodorit in Uzès. Romanesque style, although restored in its original style in the seventeenth century after the wars of religion, its construction dates from the twelfth century. Similar to Italian bell towers in the Lombard style, this vestige of the old cathedral is the only example in France of a round bell tower. Its name is due to the numerous mullioned windows that adorn its floors. Its roof is made of glazed tiles in yellow and green tones. Together with the ducal palace, it is one of the symbols of the city of Uzès.
Enjoy the Uzès Market
Since the 13th century, the Place aux Herbes has been the epicenter of the Uzès market, for me, one of the most beautiful and lively in the region and the one we often come to.
Every Wednesday and Saturday, fans and tourists flock there, attracted by the quality of local products and the welcoming atmosphere. Numerous other gastronomic manifestations make the city a prominent place to taste the flavors of the south.
Immerse yourself in the daily life of Uzès by visiting its lively markets. Here you will find a wide variety of fresh and local products, perfect to taste and take home as special souvenirs.

The asparagus of l’Uzège, the gariguettes strawberries, the organic eggs, the cheeses of the region, the winegrowers… about sixty producers fill the Place aux Herbes from 7:30 every Wednesday.
For more than twenty years, the farmers’ market in the middle of the week has symbolized the excellence of the products of the land and is a precursor of short circuits.
In addition, Saturday’s Uzès market, with its 200 exhibitors, is known for its colors and aromas, which makes it an emblematic place of the southern markets much appreciated by tourists during the high season.
Uzès has gained notoriety over the years thanks to the friendliness and authenticity that reigns in its markets. And this is for a long time, since the first known market on the Place aux Herbes was organized in 1241!

Enjoy a walk through the Eure Valley
Located a few steps from the bustling center of Uzès, the Eure Valley is a haven of peace and tranquility, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
The valley is home to the source of the Eure River, which has its origin in the nearby valley. You will find a tranquil watercourse surrounded by ancient trees, a truly idyllic place for a picnic. Walking trails wind through the area, taking you past softly murmuring streams, fields of wildflowers, and white horses. In spring and summer, the valley is particularly vibrant, with the air filled with the sweet scent of flowers in bloom.
The Origin of the Eure River and its Impact on Ancient Rome
Uzès is known for being the source of the Eure River, a geographical feature that has had a significant impact on the history of the region. In the Eure valley, on the outskirts of the city, is the spring that gives rise to this river. The presence of this water source was of vital importance, as it provided a necessary resource for the sustenance and development of ancient civilizations.
During the Roman period, this water resource became even more relevant. The Romans, known for their astonishing advances in engineering and architecture, needed a reliable water supply for their growing city of Nîmes. It was then that an incredible feat of engineering was carried out: the construction of the aqueduct of Nîmes, better known as the “Pont du Gard”.
This aqueduct, which is one of the most impressive in the entire Roman empire, was built to transport water from the source of the Eure River in Uzès to Nîmes, covering a distance of around 50 kilometers. The aqueduct not only provided water for daily consumption, but also supplied the fountains, baths and houses of the city.
The fact that the Romans channelled the Eure River to feed water to Nîmes shows the strategic importance of Uzès and the water wealth of its territory. Although today the infrastructure is no longer used to transport water, the Pont du Gard is preserved as an exceptional witness of Roman engineering and is a popular tourist destination.
This example of advanced engineering and problem solving in ancient times highlights the importance that water has had throughout history for the development of societies, and how Uzès, with its water source, has played a leading role in this region of France.
Family tourisme: A break of recreation in a playground
Right at the entrance of the valley, you are greeted by a charming park dedicated to the little ones. This playground is equipped with various play structures that guarantee hours of outdoor fun.

The park also offers a manicured picnic area to enjoy an al fresco lunch, savor local produce and gaze out over the stunning valley. It is a perfect place for a quiet break with the family and recharge during your visit.

Where to eat with the family in Uzès
If you are looking for a place to enjoy a good meal in Uzès, here are some suggestions according to the top-ranked restaurants on Tripadvisor:
I recommend
1- Have an ice cream or a frozen drink at La Glaciere d’Uzès, an ice cream parlor a few meters from the Place aux Herbes.
They offer a variety of soft drinks, milk shakes, slushies and ice creams to take away or enjoy sitting right there in the shade. The ice creams are really good. And a refreshing break is always very good to take a break in the middle of the walk.
2- Taste one of the hundreds of quality beers offered at NAMASPAMOUSSA. A brewery with a very cozy atmosphere where you are treated very kindly that is diagonal to l’Eglise Saint-Etienne.
I recommend for an aperitif in Uzès.
La Fougasse Francesa: Pan con Historia y Sabor
The fougasse is one of the most iconic breads of France, especially associated with the Provence region. With a shape reminiscent of a leaf or a wheat ear, this bread is recognizable by its characteristic cuts that give it a rustic and distinctive appearance.
Originally, the fougasse was used to assess the temperature of wood-fired ovens. If it baked quickly, the oven was ready for the main bread. However, over time, the fougasse became a food itself, evolving into varieties that incorporate ingredients like olives, herbs, garlic, or even anchovies.
Beyond being a simple bread, the fougasse reflects the rich culinary tradition of the Provence region. Its crispy texture on the outside and tender interior, combined with the Mediterranean flavors that are often incorporated into its dough, make this bread a true delight and a testament to the art of French bakery.
And the best place to enjoy a Fougasse can’t be other than La Fougasse d’Uzès. A bakery that, in addition, was voted in 2018 as the best bakery in France.
