The History of Goudargues
A brief introduction
Goudargues, affectionately known as “The Little Venice of Gard,” has a fascinating history dating back to Roman times. Although remains show human presence from the 3rd century, the true development of the village began in the 9th century with the founding of an abbey by the Benedictine monks of Aniane. This monastery, established around the “Gordanicus” pond, used the springs to irrigate crops and operate oil and grain mills, laying the foundations for the village’s growth.
During the Carolingian period, Goudargues played a crucial role in the region. In 781, Count Guilhem built the first chapel on a hill overlooking the Cèze River, known as the Chapelle Saint-Michelet. This site served as both a religious center and a military defense point and was later donated to Charlemagne. The original structure dates from the second half of the 8th century, and a second chapel, built later, shows the continuity of monastic settlement in the area.
Over the centuries, Goudargues has preserved its rich historical architecture, including the 12th-century abbey church, restored in the 19th century. Today, the village is a charming tourist destination with canals shaded by centuries-old plane trees, refreshing fountains, and a tranquil atmosphere. Its history and natural beauty invite visitors to explore its corners and immerse themselves in its monastic and Carolingian past.
