The Devil agreed to the deal, and when the bridge was completed, he was “rewarded” with the soul of a dog carrying a pot tied to its tail. Furious and deceived, the Devil tried to destroy the bridge but couldn’t.
In a fit of rage and spite, the Devil threw himself into the river at a spot known as “The Black Abyss.” However, his story did not end there. He disguised himself as a goat or ram and haunted the neighboring St-Jean de Fos, spreading fear and discord. The locals, tired of his mischief, decided to confront him. After a failed attempt by the local priest to expel him with holy water, the villagers, armed and brave, chased the Devil shouting “Pica lou! Pica lou!” (Stab him! Stab him!).
Finally weakened by the holy water, the Devil fled and submerged himself again in the ‘Black Abyss’. Since then, pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago who cross the Pont du Diable throw stones into the river, ensuring that the Devil will never emerge from the abyss again.
This bridge, more than just a structure, is a symbol of the eternal struggles between good and evil, cunning and betrayal. To this day, the legend remains alive, and the Pont du Diable continues to be a place of mystery, fear, and admiration.
