Designed with a grid layout typical of the bastides of the time, it was located across the Aude River from the Cité de Carcassonne. However, the relationship between the Cité and the Bastide was not always harmonious. The Cité de Carcassonne, a military fortress inhabited by nobles and soldiers, represented the feudal past, while the Bastide, with its mercantile focus and emerging bourgeois class, symbolized the new order fostered by the French monarchy.
This division of functions generated tensions for a time. La Bastide prospered economically, becoming the commercial center of the region, which displaced part of the activity that had previously taken place in the Cité. In addition, social and political differences fueled a sense of rivalry between the two poles of the city.
Today, this history of conflict is behind us, and the Bastide and the Cité complement each other to offer visitors two sides of the same Carcassonne: medieval splendor and 13th century urban innovation. A tour of both sides is essential to understand the historical richness of this incredible city.

What we also did this last time we came to Carcassonne, was to take a can of cassoulet for 4 people to share at home with friends. And for that we went to the store La Demeure du Cassoulet, a place that combines modernity and tradition in the heart of the Cité.
We were welcomed by Michael, their passionate manager, who is dedicated to keeping alive the gastronomic traditions of the region. In this store, you can find a careful selection of local products that reflect the richness of Languedoc. In addition to cassoulet, there are sausages, wines, fois gras, honey and other delicacies that invite you to take a little piece of Carcassonne home with you.
