What are Les Cevennes
The Cévennes, known in English as the Cévennes, are a chain of mountains forming part of the Massif Central in south-central France. They extend mainly through the departments of Gard, Lozère, Ardèche and Haute-Loire. The region is rich in both geographical and cultural significance and has protected areas in the Cévennes National Park, created in 1970, which covers some 85,000 hectares. This park was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1985 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 as “Causses and Cévennes”.
The Cévennes are known for their rugged and mountainous landscape, with a relatively low population density and a strong cultural heritage. It is characterised by deep valleys and dense vegetation, with a mixture of schist, limestone and granite areas, giving it a great diversity of landscapes. In addition, the region has an important historical and cultural past, including the legacy of Protestantism.
The area is also famous for its intense weather episodes known as “cévenols episodes”, which can cause heavy rainfall and are characteristic of the region. The region offers a wealth of outdoor activities, with thousands of kilometres of marked trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as eco-museums to explore.
The area is also known for its gastronomy, which includes products such as chestnuts and pélardon (a type of cheese) and for its contribution to French history, including resistance during the religious wars known as the rebellions of the Camisards.
The definition of “Cévennes” can vary widely, with some people referring to a very specific geographical area and others using the term more broadly to include surrounding areas with similar characteristics. This diversity of definitions reflects the rich complexity of the region in terms of geology, culture, history and climate.

From Montpellier
The distance between Montpellier and Anduze is approximately 70 km, which makes the journey quite short and direct.
To reach Anduze from Montpellier, start your journey by heading north on the A750. This route offers a scenic drive through the varied landscape of southern France, from the rolling hills to the views of the Cévennes National Park. It’s a super nice drive and usually takes about 1 hour.
From Nîmes
To get to Anduze from Nîmes, take the N106 towards Alès. Once in Alès, follow the signs to Anduze. The journey by car usually takes about 45 minutes.
From Avignon
To reach Anduze from Avignon by car, you’ll need to prepare yourself for a delightful drive through the heart of southern France. The journey begins by heading west from Avignon on the A9 motorway, known as La Languedocienne. Continue along this route until you reach exit 25 for Nîmes, where you join the N106 towards Alès.
As you approach Alès, you will find signposts that will lead you directly to Anduze. This part of the journey will take you through typical southern French landscapes, including vineyards and small villages that seem to be frozen in time.
Once in Alès, follow the signs to Anduze. The total journey from Avignon to Anduze usually takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day. This journey is not only practical but also beautiful, offering an unforgettable experience as you travel through the Occitania region.

L’Eglise Saint Etienne d’Anduze

The Temple of Anduze
The Temple of the Reformed Church of Anduze is an emblem of religious architecture and Protestant heritage in France. Built in 1823, it stands on the site of the former military barracks and is one of the largest temples in the country, along with that of Saint Hippolyte.
Its neoclassical façade is imposing with columns and a triangular pediment, while its interior has a hemicycle layout that directs all eyes towards the marble communion table. The church organ, which dates back to 1848 and was damaged in the 1958 floods, has been restored several times, testifying to the resilience of the community. Although the church is currently closed for renovations to its roof, photographs have been installed outside, allowing visitors to appreciate its interior. This place of worship, listed as a historical monument in 1979, remains a pillar of Anduze’s history and culture.

Bambousseraie can be reached by car, which is less than 5 minutes from the village, or you can take the Cévennes Steam Train, which I’ll talk about later.

As the train winds through valleys, across ancient bridges and over viaducts, breathtaking views of the French countryside are revealed, including rivers, mountains and charming villages. The Cévennes steam train ride is a memorable experience of approximately 40 minutes that will delight adults and children alike. As the train meanders from Anduze to Saint-Jean-du-Gard (I’ll tell you about this village later), passengers can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and historical engineering. I recommend you take the first train in the morning from Anduze and go to lunch at Saint-Jean-du-Gard, which is the last station. You can do it in the restaurant at the Gare or cross the bridge and go to the village. Don’t linger too long so you can catch the train back in time!
With your belly full, you start your way back, and at the station in the middle you enter the Bambousseraie.
Once you get out you take the train to Anduze station.
Buy your tickets on the page I left you at the beginning to make sure you get them. And remember to validate them before boarding the train at the machines that are in the station, entering on the left.

Available from February to June and from September to December, the audio guide provides an enriching experience, also adapted for children, allowing each visitor to dive into the depths of Trabuc at their own pace..
The mystery of the 100 000 soldiers: This unique geological phenomenon captures the imagination. Over an area of 150 m2, thousands of pointed stalagmites emerge from the ground like a petrified forest. With no apparent sign on the cave ceiling to explain their origin, these calcite “soldiers” stand on a clay base, creating a sight that has baffled amateurs and scientists alike.
