Is Sauve located in the Cévennes region?
Sauve is a village located in the south of France, in the Occitania region. Although it is close to the Les Cévennes region, which is a mountain range that is part of the French Massif Central, Sauve is not within the protected area of the Les Cévennes National Park. However, it can be considered part of the broader geographic and cultural area of Les Cévennes, given its proximity and its landscape influenced by the same geology and climate of the region. Therefore, although not in the heart of Les Cévennes, Sauve shares many of the natural and cultural characteristics of this beautiful area of France.
What are Les Cevennes
The Cévennes, known in English as the Cévennes, are a chain of mountains forming part of the Massif Central in south-central France. They extend mainly through the departments of Gard, Lozère, Ardèche and Haute-Loire. The region is rich in both geographical and cultural significance and has protected areas in the Cévennes National Park, created in 1970, which covers some 85,000 hectares. This park was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1985 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 as “Causses and Cévennes”.
The Cévennes are known for their rugged and mountainous landscape, with a relatively low population density and a strong cultural heritage. It is characterised by deep valleys and dense vegetation, with a mixture of schist, limestone and granite areas, giving it a great diversity of landscapes. In addition, the region has an important historical and cultural past, including the legacy of Protestantism.
The area is also famous for its intense weather episodes known as “cévenols episodes”, which can cause heavy rainfall and are characteristic of the region. The region offers a wealth of outdoor activities, with thousands of kilometres of marked trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as eco-museums to explore.
The area is also known for its gastronomy, which includes products such as chestnuts and pélardon (a type of cheese) and for its contribution to French history, including resistance during the religious wars known as the rebellions of the Camisards.
The definition of “Cévennes” can vary widely, with some people referring to a very specific geographical area and others using the term more broadly to include surrounding areas with similar characteristics. This diversity of definitions reflects the rich complexity of the region in terms of geology, culture, history and climate.

At the bottom of the village you can witness the impressive resurgence of the Vidourle River, a natural phenomenon that captures the essence of the place. And before entering the village, pause at Le Pont Vieux (the Old Bridge) to take in the scenery and feel the history that surrounds it.

Take a unique hike in the Sea of Rocks: Explore La Mer de Rochers
A walk through La Mer de Rochers, in Sauve, is an experience that combines natural beauty with a journey through history. The walk begins in the narrow streets of the village leading to the upper part, where a path winds its way through ruined stone walls, vestiges of ancient dwellings and buildings dating back centuries.
The route reveals a surprising limestone chaos, slowly emerging among a network of small trails protected by a lush nature. The rock formations, with whimsical and fantastic shapes, rise among a dense garrigue vegetation, composed mainly of oaks and laurel trees. These stony giants, sculpted by time, wind and rain, create a landscape that might seem lunar if it were not for the thick vegetation that covers it.
This natural environment comes from the “terra rossa”, a soil so fertile that until the middle of the 20th century, abundant orchards of cherry, peach, fig and micocouliers were cultivated in the area. Over time, and given the difficulty of working these hilly lands, the orchards were abandoned and the garrigue took over the landscape.
The trail, about 5.5 km long, not only offers direct contact with nature, but also leads visitors to discover the Castellas, an emblematic construction of Sauve. In 1704, it was commissioned by the Languedoc intendant Roussillon de Basville as a guérite within the walls of Sauve, on the rocher du Castellas, a strategic place for surveillance.
Near the Mer de Rochers, you will find the Château de Roquevaire, an 18th century building built on a site of older occupation. This castle evokes the myth of paradise lost and the Garden of Eden, with its terraced gardens, its complete enclosure, and its collection of exotic and rare plants. It was a place of reflection for Henry Delmas, abbot of the abbey of St Pierre de Sauve, who used it as a personal retreat.
Unfortunately, religious wars severely damaged the building, but over time, it has undergone multiple renovations, preserving its rich history and cultural importance.
La Mer de Rochers en Sauve is a journey through history, architecture and nature, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.

In addition, the 3 hectare site provides the opportunity to interact with the farm animals through activities such as treasure hunts, and has picnic areas and bathing areas for the full enjoyment of all visitors.
For children and pre-adolescents, there are 45 workshops ranging from 0.6 to 3 metres in height, with zip lines, nets for walking and climbing, and various walkways, distributed in three levels of difficulty. Parents can accompany and follow their children along the route, guaranteeing safety and fun for the youngest.
