The History of Vézénobres

A brief introduction

Strolling through Vézénobres

Vézénobres, a picturesque village situated between the Cévennes and Provence, has a fascinating history that dates back over 2,500 years. Originally, the Romans established an oppidum on the hill, laying the foundations for what would become the village. In the Middle Ages, Vézénobres flourished as an important commercial center on the Régordane route.

During the Hundred Years’ War, Vézénobres played a crucial role as a defensive stronghold. Its fortifications allowed the inhabitants to resist attacks and protect themselves from looting. In the 14th century, the Château de Fay-Perault, although now in ruins, witnessed these conflicts. The Château de Girard, built in the same era, now houses the Maison de la Figue and the tourist center.

Vézénobres is also famous for its fig production, a tradition that dates back to the 17th century. The houses on the south side of the village have large drying rooms where figs were hung to dry. Today, a conservatory orchard houses more than 100 varieties of figs, celebrating this rich tradition.

The village has preserved its historical and architectural heritage, with cobbled streets, Roman houses, and the Church of Saint-André. Walking through Vézénobres is like traveling back in time, discovering stories and legends at every corner. This destination remains a living testimony to its rich medieval heritage, offering visitors an immersion into its fascinating past.
