What to Do in Albi

The best way to enjoy Albi is to start at its impressive Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, stroll through the narrow medieval streets of the old town, and wander the peaceful gardens of the Palais de la Berbie overlooking the Tarn River. Add a visit to the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, a ride on the Petit Train, and a slow sunset walk across Albi’s bridges. It’s a compact destination, easy to explore, and perfect for a cultural family getaway.

Getting to Albi by car from Toulouse

Road to Albi from Toulouse through yellow rapeseed fields in spring.
Fields of rapeseed in bloom on the road between Toulouse and Albi, a landscape that makes you fall in love during the trip.

Getting to Albi from Toulouse by car is a comfortable and direct option, ideal for those who want to explore the landscape between these two cities in the south of France and discover what to do in Albi. The journey of approximately 80 kilometers can be done in about an hour, depending on traffic.

To start the trip, simply take the A68 from Toulouse, a highway that connects directly to Albi. The route is fairly straightforward and well signposted, making the trip easy even for those unfamiliar with the area. The A68 is characterized by its picturesque scenery, especially in the sections where it crosses fields and small hills and is also known as the Route du Pastel, in honor of the history of this plant so closely linked to the region.

Once in Albi, you will find several parking options both in the outlying areas and in the city center. This will allow you to explore the heart of Albi on foot, enjoying its historic cobblestone streets and impressive architecture without worrying about traffic in the city center.

Plus, traveling by car gives you the flexibility to stop at nearby highlights, like the vineyards of Gaillac or the picturesque villages along the Tarn River, turning your trip to Albi into a richer and more complete experience.

Why is the route from Toulouse to Gaillac called the Route du Pastel?

The A68 highway, christened the Route du Pastel, pays homage to the pastel plant, known as “l’or bleu” (the blue gold) of the region. Native to Central Asia, the pastel has been prized since ancient times not only for its medicinal properties, but also for the distinctive blue color obtained from its leaves. This unique color became a symbol of French royalty, dressing kings in its noble hue. At the time of the Renaissance, Occitania became the epicenter of pastel production, particularly in the area known as the Pays de Cocagne, which led the European trade in this prized dye.

People participating in a workshop on natural pastel dyeing, a traditional Albi technique.
Craft pastel dyeing workshop, a unique experience to discover the traditions of Albi.

Pastel cultivation flourished in the Lauragais since the 15th century. This hardy plant, able to withstand both drought and cold, showed a distinctive sign when it was ready for harvest: its leaves were tinged with a violet edge, indicating a high pigment content.

The pastel fields adorn the region with their yellow color, symbolizing the historical prosperity they brought to cities such as Toulouse and Albi, visible today in the majestic architecture and the “hôtels particuliers” (mansions) of the area.

Cocagne, the result of fermenting crushed cake leaves, was transformed into agranat, a paste that was then used to obtain the famous blue dye.

The route that bears his name, the Route du Pastel, passes through these landscapes, reminding travelers of the cultural and economic heritage that this plant brought to the region, from ancient times to the renaissance of cultivation today, as celebrated in places such as the Musée de Magrin and the Château des Plantes.

The presence of numerous pigeon lofts in the landscape is an additional testimony to the prosperous past, as guano was used to fertilize the land where the cake grew. The Route du Pastel is therefore a living tribute to a plant that has colored the history of the region with its unique blue.

Introduction to the history of Albi

Albi, located in the heart of the Tarn department in the south of France, is a city of rich history and cultural heritage, famous for its impressive red brick architecture that makes it stand out in the region.

Its history dates back to Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that Albi gained prominence, especially during the crusade against the Cathars in the 13th century, a religious movement considered heretical by the Catholic Church.

The construction of the majestic St. Cecilia Cathedral, begun in 1282 as a symbol of ecclesiastical power and authority over the Cathars, is one of the most remarkable examples of Gothic architecture in the south of France.

Over the following centuries, Albi continued to flourish, taking advantage of its strategic location on the banks of the Tarn River and developing a thriving textile industry.

The economic renaissance of the city led to the construction of palaces and buildings that today make up its old town, admired by visitors from all over the world.

The 19th century saw the birth in Albi of one of its most famous sons, the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The presence of the museum dedicated to his work in the former Palais de la Berbie highlights the cultural importance of the city and attracts art lovers from all over.

This museum houses the largest collection of Lautrec’s works, illustrating his life and artistic ingenuity that captured the vibrant nightlife of Paris in the late 19th century.

Today, Albi proudly holds its UNESCO World Heritage status, a recognition of its beautifully preserved historic center that feels like a journey through time. The cobbled streets, the towering cathedral, and the rich museums not only tell the story of Albi. They also invite visitors to explore and appreciate both its tumultuous past and its vibrant present.

Frequently asked questions

What is the reason for the intensive use of red brick in the construction of the region’s towns?

The intensive use of red brick in Albi and other towns in the region is due to the abundance of local clay, which is ideal for brick making. This practice began in Roman times but intensified in the Middle Ages. Red bricks were not only inexpensive and accessible due to the natural resources available, but also offered durability and strength, making them ideal for building in a climate that can be both humid and hot. In addition, red brick became a distinctive element of local architecture, contributing to the aesthetics and visual character of the region’s towns and villages.

What souvenirs can I take away from Albi?

Albi offers a variety of unique souvenirs that reflect its rich culture and traditions. You can take with you:

Toulouse-Lautrec art and reproductions: Because of the city’s deep connection to the painter, you’ll find many reproductions of his works — postcards, posters, and beautifully illustrated books.

Albi ceramics: Local ceramics are known for their quality and unique designs, making them a lovely decorative or practical souvenir.

Lavender products: As in much of southern France, lavender items, oils, soaps, and perfumes, are especially popular.

Gaillac wines: Take advantage of Albi’s proximity to the Gaillac wine region and bring home a few bottles of its best vintages.

Gastronomic specialties: Albi and its surroundings offer delights like foie gras, regional charcuterie, and local cheeses, wonderful gifts for any food lover.

These souvenirs are not only a souvenir of your visit, but also allow you to take a bit of the spirit of Albi home with you.

I’ve been living in France for many years with my family. Over time, we’ve explored this wonderful country from top to bottom, and it holds a very special place in my heart.

Sharing my passion for travel has always come naturally to me, and now I’d love to help you plan your own adventure.

I know that planning a trip can sometimes feel overwhelming — even stressful. That’s exactly why I created this blog, dedicated to France (and especially its charming little villages), so that you can start enjoying your journey from the very first moments of planning.
