History of Castelnou: a medieval stronghold in the heart of Roussillon

Typical panorama of Castelnou, France, recommended when exploring the village. Photo by diegoenfrance.com
View of the valley and the church from the heights of Castelnou, surrounded by nature © diegoenfrance.com

Castelnou was founded in the 10th century as a key defensive stronghold of the viscounty of the Castelnou, one of the most powerful families in the region. The castle, built on top of the hill, had a clear mission: to watch over the valley and protect the territory from invasions.

Over the centuries, the village grew sheltered by its walls, becoming a commercial and artisanal center. During the wars between France and Aragon, Castelnou suffered sieges and plundering, but its medieval structure remained surprisingly intact.

Today, walking through Castelnou is like traveling through a thousand years of history, in a setting that seems frozen in time.
